Our house got pedicures yesterday in celebration of Grace's 20th birthday! It was my first time and my toes feel very pretty.
While I was waiting for my toes to dry, there was a lady with one of the manicurists sitting next to me. They were making small talk about what they were doing in life, their marital status, etc. The customer said she was still single with no kids and working (she looked like she was in her late 30s). The manicurist said, "Oh, that's fine! It's good that you're being independent and not being tied down." She replied, "Yeah. I love being my own woman and making a lot of money with a career that I love. I don't need to worry about taking care of a family." I felt... so sad for this feminist world view... to see the joys and blessings of raising a family being seen as a restricting unwanted burden. I'm still a Christian woman struggling to understand what it means to be a Titus 2 woman passionate for God's kingdom, not to be influenced by this fast-paced modern society and what it expects, and to press on in hopes of pleasing my Savior! A lot has changed since college... I remember when I wrote my college essay about what I wanted to pursue and why. My essay was so passionate about architecture and I even cheesily said at the end, "No matter how much the workload will be, 'til death do us part." How dare I! I can't even believe how obsessed I was and how it was such a priority to me that I used that phrase to describe how committed I was to the major. Now I see my major as a mean for practical reasons. My passion has definitely waned and I've become more sober minded about what a time and energy commitment this career field entails. Man, I don't want my life to be about my job and my effort to please my boss. I want my life to be about my family and how I can best please my husband (and God of course!). I hope that the pressures of this world would not consume my mind and heart, but that I would be completely liberated because of the eternity that Christ has set in my heart. :) |
