Last night at around 10:30 p.m. as I was doing the usual evening activities of a homebody, I heard a piercing *screeeeeeeeech* and a huge *CRASH*. Immediately, I thought, "Oh, crap" and yelled to my parents asking if they had just heard that. My mom was outside my room looking at photo albums (I think she does this every night) either reminiscing about the days when my brother and I were babies, or collecting photos to scan to post on her Facebook. So, of course she didn't hear anything because she was in her own world. We all rushed to my balcony, and lo and behold, a truck had totally crashed into our gated fence, knocking a huge chunk of it down. The truck was literally in our backyard. There were two shadows there, and one started RUNNING. I shouted, "HEY! THAT GUY IS RUNNING AWAY!" The other meekly exclaimed, "Ma'am, please come down here."
You know me, I do not tolerate shady business like that. As my parents rushed down, I grabbed my phone (to call the police), a camera (to record the accident), and my 200K volt taser (for protection! Thank you, white elephant!). It turns out two kids (ok, by kid I mean 16-year olds) avoided a squirrel, lost control of the car, and swerved onto the street. One of them ran away (totally shady, probably wanted to avoid the police and the driver is probably not allowed to be driving other passengers), but the driver stayed of course. He was a nervous wreck, but extremely remorseful. I felt pretty bad for him. He had gotten the car two weeks ago after bringing up his grades, and was about to start his junior year. Po-po came. A tow truck came. Some thoughts about the night: 1. I was once a teenager too (I feel so old typing that). I understand the thrill of defying my parents and looking for trouble, but honestly, I really regret all those white lies that I used to feed to my parents. Honesty and obedience is so crucial. 2. The driver was SO afraid to call his parents. It was to a point that it seemed that he couldn't rely on them for moral support and protection. I hope that in my future relationships with my own kids, comfort would exceed fear. 3. There's something about the big sister role that comes so naturally to me... And especially with younger guys versus girls. 4. The truck hit and went into Comet's late night barking spot. Had he been there, he would've been a goner for sure. So thankful at the time, he was safe in my room. 5. Just hit squirrels. There are too many out there anyway. DRIVE SAFELY, EVERYONE! |
